Choosing the right contractor
Choosing the right contractor is extremely important; it can save you time and money. Here are some tips on choosing the right contractor:
- Ask for recommendations: You probably know someone that’s had work done either recently or in the past. We suggest you reach out and ask who they used, did they trust them, did they listen to their needs/wants, were they knowledgable, what was the quality of the work, and was it performed and completed on time?
- Check for Licenses and Insurance: Once you’ve narrowed your list down, check their licenses with state contracting boards to make sure they are current and ask them if they are fully insured and will be able to provide a certificate of insurance.
- Spend Time in Your Home with the Contractor: Give contractors a list of your wants and needs. Get their ideas and listen to them closely. You’re looking for someone who knows what they are doing and points out problem areas and solutions. Reviewing the project in your home is a time when both you and the contractor can get to know one another. If you feel comfortable with one more than another, that too will help you narrow down your decision.
- Get a Quote: Before any work begins, you should get a detailed quote for the work scope and agree on a price. Even though the cheapest quote can sometimes mean they will cut corners or the quality of work will be negatively impacted, that certainly does not mean you should go for the most expensive. You want to use a balance of recommendations, the ease of your relationship, and the quote to make your final decision.
